Real Madrid vs Atlético Madrid

La Ciudad of Two Tales

The UEFA Champions League finalists have been determined. Two teams from the same city – Madrid – will be facing each other on May 28 in another city – Milan – to decide who will be crowned the champion of the most coveted club soccer competition in the world. Real Madrid, one of the sport’s richest clubs, always features a star-studded roster and is always one of the favorites to reach the final, and once there, to win it. Two years ago they won the competition for the 10th time, which is a record.

City rival Atletico Madrid has pulled off major upsets with the combination of sound fundamentals, individual brilliance, and spirited teamwork in both the quarterfinals, beating Barcelona, and the semifinals, beating Bayern Munich, to reach the final. This will be Atletico’s third time in the final, but they have never won the competition. Only minutes separated this underdog from winning the final 2 years ago against – you guessed it – Real Madrid.

While there will probably be many opportunities to watch that 2014 final over the next few weeks, my 9-year-old son really enjoys watching this version of that game. Remembering that our primary duty as parent coaches is to foster the love for the game among young players, so a LEGO version of a very informative recap may be just the thing to help raise interest for this game that all soccer fans should watch. Not that there should be too much convincing needed to watch a game that fits all 6 factors one should look for when choosing a game to watch with their kids.
